lyrics

If we are, then, to exist, my friend…
If we are here to be
Though I strive, and I persist
to shoot beyond what we can see
and though I’ve longed, and I have missed
some nebulous nirvana sea
and though I’ve chased in vain elusive mists I pray for on my knees
But yet my life, it still consists of earthly matter and debris
for it seems Space - it must insist
that something take up form and breathe
and then the forms, they seem as if
compelled to grow more incomplete
as though they’re meant not to live with,
but rather, live apart from each

And though I can’t help knowing this,
the path of frivolous we lead
and we claim it matters which of this or that we take or leave
And though my deepest soul doth wish
to fall right through these forms to peace
It seems I’m still meant to exist,
that I have come here so to be
Then I suspect I’ve been amiss -
might have missed gifts given to me
For with my eyes set all adrift,
I trampled roses with my feet,
So, too my gaze was always lifted
towards the sky ignoring seeds…
that held the same droplets of wonder
all my searching rarely reached -

Somehow you softened them, these fists
I’d thought hands praying for release
And, Oh, those times we gently kissed,
letting another open me -
and, Oh, then breathing in a brisk invigoration from the Sea
And then the rare impassioned trysts
that hushed my mind and flushed my cheeks
Oh I thank every little whiff of form
that crazed and nurtured me
That, in the end, made me less stiff,
as I let details enter me
And thus no longer contradict
my very cells - each which I need
*
…Under these idealistic rifts
(thank God) I sometimes fell beneath -
Sometimes I focused, for a crisp
and lovely second, on one piece
Forgot the Whole, and felt a wisp
of grass that tickled in the breeze
